Marco-Pierre White talks brewing with Martin Hammill

When Martin Hammill, brewery manager at Hadrian Border, had the pleasure of meeting high-profile chef Marco-Pierre White at the eponymous Steakhouse Bar & Grill in Hotel Indigo, Newcastle, the conversation homed in on beer.

Hadrian Border supplies Grainger Ale to the hotel – which sits alongside MPW’s creation The Governor, a beer brewed by JW Lees in Manchester and named after his greyhound.

“I make a beer too – The Governor,” said MPW (pictured right). “What did you think of it?” Martin said: “You stick to cooking and I’ll stick to brewing.” Behind that rather fearsome exterior came a hearty laugh.

Martin says: “He was fascinated to learn I used to be a commercial trawlerman and spoke very passionately about fresh produce.”
