Alastair Gilmour’s Budvar City Pub Quiz blog
How well do you know your Budvar?
Hey, we’re a brainy lot, apparently. The Budvar City Pub Quiz has been touring Tyneside and Durham armed with 40 questions, branded giveaways, free beer and the promise of a visit to the Czech brewery for the eventual winning team. And now that the fantastic event has reached the halfway stage, our pubs are proving more than a match for their London counterparts.
Quizmaster Chris Betts and events coordinator Alice Cowley have been mightily impressed by the turnout, the enthusiasm and the knowledge displayed by North East quizzers, not to mention the standard of our pubs.
“This quiz series is probably better than the ones we did in London,” says Alice. “There’s a good level of competition and a lot of people are very well informed. Everyone has entered into the spirit of the thing.”
But there’s still a long way to go before the roadshow heads for the Brandling Villa in South Gosforth for the grand final on March 27 when all the winning teams will fight it out to win the dream trip to South Bohemia.
Contestants have been swotting up on their Budweiser Budvar knowledge, knowing that the 10-question round devoted to the Czech beer could separate the travellers from the stay-at-homes come March 27.
Alice says: “People have been really inquisitive about Budweiser Budvar and ask how it’s different to the American Budweiser. They’ve been asking loads of other questions, which is good for brand engagement.”
But Alice confesses the key to winning is also a good, all-round grounding in general knowledge. One team member at the Durham Head of Steam event has visited the brewery in Ceske Budejovice 32 times and even though he got all of those questions correct, his team still lost the quiz by two points.
Entry is easy, enroll at one of the pubs below, register on The Original Budweiser Budvar Facebook page or simply turn up on the night.
