Here we are at the middle of the year and looking forward to a cracking summer, that is if any of May’s weather is anything to go by. June is the month of the summer solstice, the time when the Sun reaches its highest position in the sky. It marks the end of spring and the beginning of summer and is punctuated by holidays, festivals and rituals, such as going to the pub and getting your glass filled with whatever takes your fancy.
It’s also beer garden time; it’s about al fresco drinking and dining and slapping on the Factor 30 which we hint at with our cover feature. But don’t forget that the pubs with no outside area are quite often the coolest place to be (in every sense of the phrase). In hot weather, indoors among the handpulls and keg taps can be a lot more fun.
Courtesy of award-winning beer writer Adrian Tierney-Jones, we’re taking a look at some beers to drink during the World Cup – and to sample with whatever mood strikes you. And, we hear from our World Cup cover girl of 2014 and how she – a Brazilian beauty who studied at Newcastle University – remembers the North East.
We are also pleased to welcome a new regular column from Rich and Dean of Brew Stories who are video bloggers (vloggers for those in the know). This month they visited Beamish Hall Brewery, and you can read more on page 12.
So this month, enjoy yourself, go to the pub – inside or out – then follow the gigs and festivals guide on pages 26 to 35 and have a terrific June.
